2021 SIARGAO ISLAND AIRPORT & SEAPORT

 * * * * * * * * * *

I was on board a Cebu Pacific from Mactan International Airport in Cebu.  It takes around 45 minutes to reach Sayak Airport, Siargao Island which is part of the province of Surigao del Norte.

Introduction

Sayak Airport is located in the Municipality of Del Carmen, Siargao Island which is around 30 minutes to the town proper of General Luna by Van For Hire or even longer by Single Motorcycle or Tricycle which is known as "Habal-Habal". Siargao Airport is also known as Sayak Airport because it is located in the village of Barangay of Sayak in the municipality of Del Carmen,

The airport was built in 1964 by then-President Diosdado Macapagal.   In 2008, President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo approved the lengthening of the runway that enabled bigger aircraft to land at the airport.  That decision by President GMA was influenced by the increasing volume of tourists that visit the island.

Siargao Island is the home of International Surfing Competitions, Asian Surfing Competition, and the National Surfing Competition.  The event is held on the last week of September until the first week of October when the swell is huge and high.  The Surfing Competition is held in an area called Cloud 9.  It is located in the municipality of General Luna.

Finally, I arrived at Siargao Island, hehe.

The runway as viewed from the pre-departure area.

This is the waiting area for the passengers.

Playroom for children.  There is also a space for a diaper change and feeding area for babies.

Siargao Airport is serviced by Cebu Pacific direct from Cebu to Siargao Island.  As of the moment, I have no information about the other airlines with flights to Siargao Island.

Comments:

This post is made to help first-time travelers to Siargao Island.  At least with these pictures, you will be able to see in advance how the airport looks like. I have also given you an idea that Cebu Pacific flies regularly to Siargao Island.

This is my personal experience and I paid for all my expenses.  I have a separate Blog about Siargao Island which you can find on this blog site.  Just go to the Home Page

Also, I took all the photos published here except those coming from secondary sources. The sources are duly recognized by a short note under each picture.  Thanks.

RORO VESSELS & BIG OUTRIGGER BOATS

Siargao Island is also accessible through Big Outrigger Boats from Surigao City.  Big shipping companies, as well as major airlines, travel to Surigao City from Cebu City or Manila.  There are also Passengers Bus that ply the Surigao City to other major destinations in Mindanao.  Passengers and Tourists bound for Siargao Island, ride the boat going to the island.

SCHEDULE OF BOATS FROM SURIGAO CITY TO SIARGAO ISLAND

As an introduction, I have been to Surigao City many years ago.  My port of entry was Butuan City.  From Cebu, the Philippine Airlines landed at the Butuan Airport. Upon our arrival at the airport, we were fetched by a van of the provincial government of Surigao del Norte.  I forgot how long was the travel time.  It was long, I guess about two hours.

When we arrived in the city, we were billeted in our hotel fronting the Provincial Sports Stadium in the city proper.  The next day, I woke up early to roam around town.

In one of those days when we were in Surigao City, some of my travel companions went to Siargao Island. They were invited by then Superintendent of Schools Sol Matugas. Sol is the wife of the Governor Francis Matugas.  When I went to Siargao Island in 2017, my tour guide informed me that their incumbent Governor is Sol Matugas.

So, let me share this Schedule of Boats from Surigao City to Siargao Island.  My source of this information is surigaoislands.com

My Tips:

1. Please check the website of these service providers to be sure of the Schedules.
2. Normally, Ships and Outrigger Boats do not change their Schedules unless the Weather is bad.  Watch for any Philippines Coast Guard announcements.
3. Schedules change without prior notice.
