SIPALAY: THE BEACH HOUSE THAT DISAPPEARS FROM VIEW

All photos by Henry Libo-on

Sipalay City is located on the southern tip of the province of Negros Occidental. Sipalay is the rising star among popular beach areas and scuba dive sites as well as a popular travel destination. Currently, there are several tourist-class hotels, resorts and scuba dive spots that attract the local and international dive enthusiasts.

Long time ago, the beaches of Sipalay has been tainted with traces of mine tailings specifically this beachfront in the city proper.  But now, these traces of mine tailings had been slowly disappearing. Thanks to the closure of the mining company.  Although that closure meant loss of jobs, the eternal prize for the residents is the renewed recovery of the environment affected by the mining operation.

Once again, nature begins recapturing the earth of the beachfront as evidenced by the growth of coconut tree and this coastal grass.

I remember somewhere on this area, once stood the guest house of the town headed by then Mayor Rudy Chua. I remember having coffee and lunch in that guest house with other "politicos". During those years, I explored almost all nooks and corners of the town, so to speak. From the mountain areas to the beaches and the town proper itself. I used to sleep in houses of friends here, long time ago. This is my first time to have an intimate day in Sipalay - to visit my wife's cousins.

Fishing is one of the income earners for the local residents here.  But, I guess, tourism also contributed a big chunk to the increase in local revenues of the city.

Tricycle remains one of the mode of transportation in the city as well as the neighboring communities.

Segregation  is one of the ways of solid waste management that the city focused on.  "Buhi pa ang SK"....

"Paradahan" or transport terminal located near the market.

Restaurants located on the road facing the beach are busy during week-ends.  My camera rolled at this early hour of a Sunday, so you know why...

The multi-purpose concrete pavement serves as a basketball court, a place to hold big events like rally, meeting, trade fair, and also during "fiesta".... and other activities in the city.

Our host was cousin James and wife Glade.  It was a very memorable visit and a nice moment for "lafang"....haha....what with this crispy lechon...

"Lafang" Time.  The term is used by the non-conformist young people to refer to "eating time"....lol

On our way to Sipalay...this iconic site has become a trademark on this southern part of Negros Occidental....we are approaching the beach areas of the south.  "May nag jingle?" Well, it is not against the law......it is against the grass.....haha...

About Touristang Pobre

Also known as Henry Libo-on, Touristang Pobre was a former member of the Governor's Staff in the province of Negros Occidental.

As a P.A. to the Governor, TP traveled with him in all of his visits to the municipalities in Negros Occidental, including Sipalay. Everytime TP was in Sipalay, he would spend time in the Mayor's Guest House located on the Beachfront.

Times have changed and the Beach House was gone but the memories of coffee time, lunchtime, or afternoon tea and lots of conversations about Town Planning with Mayor Rudy Chua and his municipal development staff, lingered on.

Unforgettable memories indeed of the town that I have known before. Now, it has leveled up as it is now, one of the progressive component cities in the province.

Power On, Sipalay City.
