RIVING AROUND TREASURE ISLAND
By Henry Libo-on
One of the hidden places that most tourists to the city by the bay - San Francisco, do not see or probably are not aware of is a small island located down the middle part of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge. So, if you are coming from the Embarcadero area of San Francisco all you have to do is drive the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge to Oakland. Once you are near the Yerba Buena Island Tunnel, there is an exit on the left of the road going to Treasure Island. Follow that road which is called Treasure Island Road. Yerba Buena and Treasure Island are actually connected by a small landbridge. Yerba Buena is a natural island while Treasure Island is man-made.
According to Wikipedia:
- "Treasure Island is an artificial island in the San Francisco Bay and a neighborhood in the city and county of San Francisco. Built from 1936–37 for the 1939 Golden Gate International Exposition, the island's World’s Fair site is a California Historical Landmark."

This edifice on Rear Admiral Hugo Wilson Osterhaus Square is the present-day Administration Building of Treasure Island. It houses several government offices such as SFPD Behavioral Science Unit, Treasure Island Development Authority, and Treasure Island Museum. (I failed to get a picture of this building as we approached Treasurer Island, so I sourced this from Google Earth. Thanks.)

I was overwhelmed by my excitement that I visited this island that I forget to take pictures of this part of my trip, haha...so, this is taken from Google Earth.

My Comments:
Travel time from San Francisco to Treasure Island is approximately 15 minutes.
I discovered that it is nice to have coffee in the car while watching the boats and the birds passing by the Avenue of Palms. It is so relaxing to be there. Just find a curve where you will be allowed to park your car.
Always carry your camera with you so you can document your trip there. You do not know, your first time to go there might be your last.
After almost an hour, we drove back to San Francisco and decided to see more places that are not usually explored by tourists or published on travel blogs.
Finally, I would like to suggest that if you visit Yerba Buena and Treasure Island, make it your goal to visit Oakland and Berkely. If you have enough time you can even extend towards San Pablo and Vallejo. These are nice places to spend in a day's time.
