Introduction:

New York City is one of the most visited tourist destinations in the world. While international travelers love to spend time at Times Square, Central Park, the U.N. Headquarters Building, the new site of the World Trade Center, and the Statue of Liberty, still many travelers did not realize that there are other hidden tourist spots in New York that wait to be explored. One of them is Governors Island.

What is Governors Island in the past?

According to the website of Governors Island, govisland.com/history, the following are the historical facts about the Governors Island, as follows:

It was owned by the Lanape Indians who called it the "Nut Island". In June of 1637, the Dutch West India Company purchased the island from the Lanape. The island is part of the Manhattan Region which the Native Americans populated at that time.

In 1634, the English captured the New Amsterdam, referring to the Manhattan region, and name it New York. The island was then renamed Governors Island because it became the residence of His Majesty's Governors.

Briefly, in 1776 the American revolution erupted. In 1783, the British left the island for Canada. From 1794 to 1812, the Americans fortified the island and instituted several developments thereat. From 1861-1865, the island continued to serve as a military function until the later part of the 1800s. In 1966 the island was turned over to the U.S. Coast Guard. The island also became the home of 3,000 and a commuting population of 1,500. Under the Coast Guard, the island is the home of the Atlantic Area Command, Maintenance and Logistics Command, and the Captain of the Port of New York. (Reference: govisland.com/history).

My Tour of the Island

It was a Sunday, and we did not pay for the boat and other fees if there were. I was told that during weekends the boat is free, so that's it.

How to get there?

From home, we traveled for about 40 minutes to reach the terminal of the boat that will take us to Staten Island, and upon arrival, we took another smaller boat to Governors Island.

From the Lookout Hill of Governors Island, I had a very nice view of the Statue of Liberty.

Landmarks and historical buildings on Governors Island.

There are several buildings on Governors Island that used to be residences of the military and civilian personnel. There is also a hospital, bar, chapel, gymnasium, and fire station among others. There was once a railroad network, the shortest railroad in New York.

Chapel of St. Cornelius the Centurion was built on Governors Island in 1846 through the leadership of the army chaplain, Rev. John McVickar with support from the Trinity Church, New York. (Source: gothamist.com)

Hereunder is my Practice Vlog on Governors Island.
No Bashing Please. Just for fun.

Governors Island is 800 yards from Lower Manhattan. Thus, it is more visible from Governors Island. Brooklyn, New York, however, is also visible from the Lookout Hill on Governors Island.
