Introduction

Today's feature Blog is about CPSU Victorias City Campus.

It all began as a dream for Mayor Severo A. Palanca to provide a quality tertiary education to his "kasimanwa" especially the young people of Victorias City.

During his term as Local Chief Executive, Mayor Palanca initiated a partnership with the head of CPSU Main Campus in Kabankalan, Dr. Freddie Maningo to establish a CPSU Campus in Victorias City. So, on March 18, 2011, the Victorias City Campus of CPSU was inaugurated and in June of that year, classes were opened with 10 courses and 522 Freshmen students.

The Marker states:

"CPSU Victorias City University Campus stands as a model of an LGU-Academe partnership initiated by Mayor Severo A. Palanca & Dr. Freddie C. Maningo. It was inaugurated on March 18, 2011, and opened its first classes in June of the same year with 10 courses and 522 freshmen."

A Brief History

CPSU originally started as Negros Occidental Agricultural School or what is popularly known as NONAS in 1946. (en.wikipedia.com)

Honestly, I don't know how it became NONAS. When I was working with then Governor Alfredo L. Montelibano, Jr., as his personal assistant, I already heard him and the other officials calling the school as NONAS. I still don't know what the other N means or how it became part of the acronym. If you know, please comment below.

On September 6, 1977, the school was converted to NOAC or Negros Occidental Agricultural College by virtue of a Presidential proclamation. On July 3, 2001, NOAC was converted to Negros State College of Agriculture or NSCA by virtue of R.A. 9141, and in 2012, it was converted to Central Philippines State University by virtue of R.A. 10228. (en.wikipedia.com)

Today, CPSU has 9 campuses, the main campus at Kabankalan and the following campuses spread all over the province of Negros Occidental, such as:

1. Hinoba-an Campus
2. Ilog Campus
3. Candoni Campus
4. Moises Padilla Campus
5. Hinigaran Campus
6. San Carlos City Campus
7. Sipalay City Campus
8. Victorias City Campus

The campuses offer several degree courses, master's degree courses, and Ph. D's courses.

This is an old article published six (6) years ago in Malihaw Victorias, the official publication of the City of Victorias. This article tells a story of several scholars who graduated their bachelor's and master's degree from the Central Philippines State University in Victorias City.

This shows the successful implementation of the educational programs of the state university in Victorias City.

My Comments:

Last September 18, I visited Barangay Estado (Barangay X), the birthplace of my mother where I also spent many summer vacations in the house of my cousins. Together with my travel buddies, we explored, for the first time, Gawahon Eco-Park.

Along the way, passing by the main road, was it called Estrella Road? I saw Gawahon Elementary School, Negros Occidental National Science High School, and the CPSU.

I was surprised to see these schools with nice buildings, wide campuses, and good location. I instantly made a conclusion that the educational needs of the young people in the city are a priority of the government. It made me happy. I love this part of Victorias City - Estado, Gawahon, the communities surrounding the Estrella Road where the CPSU is located, why? Because, the young people have access to better elementary, high school, and college education.

That is why, I took the time to write an article or a feature Blog about the educational institution on this part of Victorias City.

I hope that the young people will make use of these facilities and avail of the scholarships being offered to them so that they can rise above their present status in life.

Education is the greatest equalizer as most people would say. I would like to say it too because I believe in the power of education to uplift the lives of everyone most importantly the lives of our young people in this country.

Have a great day everyone. Ciao'
