GOVERNOR'S HOUSE AT WOODBURN, DELAWARE

By Henry Libo-on

In one of our visits to the family of my son-in-law's cousins, we took the time to have a tour of one of Delaware's heritage houses, the Woodburn.  Also known as the Delaware Governor's Mansion, the Woodburn House had been the home of the Governor of Delaware and his family.

The Mansion was built circa 1798 by Charles Hillyard III. The website of Delaware.gov described the Mansion as one of the finest Middle Period Georgian houses in Delaware.  Inside the house is the photo galleries, the Dining Room, and Great Hall.

The Mansion's Garden has a collection of beautiful plants and flowers.

We had a great time strolling the beautiful garden with well-manicured lawns. My grandchildren enjoyed running around the garden.  They also admired those beautiful and colorful flowers and plants.

The Mansion was purchased by the State of Delaware from its previous owners in 1965.  Since then, eight (8) Governors and their families had lived in the Mansion.  But before the State acquired it, the Mansion was the residence of Gentlemen Farmers, Landowners, An Abolitionist, two U.S. Senators, two Doctors, a Dentist, and a Judge. The first occupant of the Governor's Mansion was Governor Charles Terry, Jr.  His wife, First Lady Jessica Terry, helped in beautifying the mansion during its renovation.  For the full story, please read the article found in the photo hereunder.
